White House reporters exasperatedly show off stupidity when questioning press secretary Jen psaki on new CDC mask guidelines – and Fox News Gadfly Pierre Doocy was far down the list of offenders.

That’s not to say Doocy wasn’t so horrible – he definitely was. And his sins were similar to those of his colleagues. He started by asking Psaki why the president Joe biden stated that “if you have been fully immunized you no longer need to wear a mask” in May, “What if it was possible that this turns out to be false?” “

It’s a bit like asking why Biden said “Hello” if it was possible that one day it might not be morning. A silly premise, made all the more silly by the fact that the president said, a few seconds later (emphasis added) “for the moment, after a year of hard work and so much sacrifice, the rule is very simple: get vaccinated or wear a mask until you do. It is vaxxed or masked. To get vaccinated.”

He went on to ask “if this is an unvaccinated pandemic, then why do vaccinated people have to put the masks back on? And followed up by asking “But if the vaccines are working what this sign indicates they are doing, then why do people who got the vaccine now have to wear masks – the same as people who don’t?” had? “

Asking why vaccinated people should wear masks is a very good and fair question, but repeatedly implies that the new guidelines suggest vaccines not the work is very harmful and stupid.

Doocy is well documented and manifest bad faith (you can feel him rolling his eyes inward at times) and his audience’s lack of conviction mitigates the hurt somewhat, but even apple to apple, it wasn’t the dumbest or most hurtful set of questions. . And the evil is multiplied when it comes from ostensibly more “credible” press organs.

The Associated Press’ Alexandra Jaffé was the first of many journalists – including Doocy – who treated the revised guidelines as a “Gotcha! ” Politics. in the sense of “I was before before I was against. “

She told Psaki that “on July 4 the president gave his speech, in a way, of ‘independence from the virus’. He said, I quote: “We are closer than ever to declaring our independence from a deadly virus” and, I quote, “we have got the upper hand on the virus” and then asked “Did that declare a premature victory? And are you worried that these statements will make it more difficult to implement these revised guidelines now? “

Psaki delivered a lengthy response which included the obvious fact that things change, and that they have always said that things can change, and “that we are still in the midst of a once-in-a-generation pandemic battling a -virus. evolving.

“Regarding the president’s comments, however, do you regret those comments in retrospect?” Jaffe went on to add, “Do you think it was wise at the time, given that, you know, they might make it harder for Americans to take this seriously?”

Psaki responded by reminding Jaffe of what else President Biden said in July, which have all been proven to be true and 100% correct (emphasis added):

Today we are closer than ever to declaring our independence from a deadly virus. That doesn’t mean the battle against COVID-19 is over. We still have a lot of work to do.

But just as our Declaration of 1776 was not a call to action – was a call to action, not a reason of appeasement or a claim of victory – it was a call to action – so it is. the same today.

Back then, we had the power of an idea on our side. Today we have the power of science. Thanks to our heroic vaccination effort, we have gained the upper hand against this virus. We can live our lives, our children can go back to school, our economy is restarting.

Do not mistake yourself, COVID-19 is – has not been defeated. We all know that potent variants have arisen, like the Delta variant, but the best defense against these variants is to get vaccinated.

My fellow Americans, this is the most patriotic thing you can do. So please, if you haven’t been vaccinated, do it – do it now for yourself, for your loved ones, for your community and for your country.

You know, that’s how we’re going to stay ahead of these variations and protect the hard-earned progress we’ve made. We never want to be where we were a year ago today.

Jaffe was well aware of what Biden had said in July, but instead chose to try to concoct a “Mission: Accomplished” story from God knows what impulse; it hardly matters. The effect is to make the public wary of scientific orientations. And even Doocy didn’t have the cojones to try and get Psaki to apologize on behalf of the president.

Jaffe wasn’t the only one doing it. CBS News’ Weijia Jiang took a hit, too. Referencing in the same month of May Remarks that Dooocy did, she told Psaki that “the president’s message was to get vaxxed or masked, and now he is vaxxed and masked, in some cases “, and asked” is he regret send the message that it was a binary choice there? “

After Psaki gave the obvious and straightforward answer May was before the Delta variant exploded, Jiang explicitly urged Americans to be wary of public health advice by asking “what is your message to Americans who are feeling a blow?” rabbit right now? Why should they trust the same group of health officials who just two months ago told them they don’t have to wear masks indoors anymore? “

But the idiocy was not over yet. Speaking for fools everywhere, ABC News’ Karen Travers asked “how concerned is the White House about the message unvaccinated Americans will hear after this afternoon is that even if you are vaccinated you must now wear a mask in some settings and then just say” why bother then “about the vaccine?

Psaki probably gave his best response from the briefing here by sarcastically noting, “Well, here’s the good news: we’re all here.” You are all here. You have millions of people and Americans watching your shows and watching your shows and listening to you to hear what they should know about how to protect themselves and save their lives.

IOW: Do your job, KAREN! (Not this kind of karen, literal Karen.)

There were also several other journalists who questioned the effect of the new “messaging” directive, as if a. they have nothing to do with it and b. people who reject Covid vaccines while in hospital with Covid look at changes to CDC guidelines in order to make decisions, while simultaneously disregarding guidelines.

But here’s the really maddening part: these are the same people who spent months harass the Biden administration on dropping advice on masks to encourage people to get vaccinated, suggesting – as Travers did yesterday – that eradicating a deadly virus is insufficient motivation to do so vaccinate if people still have to wear masks for a while. And if all those mask holes had done what they were supposed to do at first, we wouldn’t be crushed by the Delta variant now.

This is not a protective instinct towards Biden and his administration. While I understand their impulse to be “productive” and not fit into discussions about the mandate of masks and vaccines in an effort to avoid generating even more resistance, I strongly disagree with that. The impulse is based on a mistaken belief that these people cannot be this stupid, and if given enough space, they’ll come back.

But they are that’s stupid, and they won’t come, and anyone who wants to go through this and not have that same mask battle every year should now be pushing for vaccine warrants.

And to be fair, a few reporters have asked Psaki about vaccine mandates, which Psaki says cannot be done nationally, federally. And it looks like the White House is moving in the right direction, as Biden is on the verge of announce a government-wide vaccine mandate on Thursday – with, hopefully, a recommendation that everyone follow suit.

But every journalist who has willfully tried to turn this problem into a stupid “Gotcha!” should be ashamed of themselves. Stupidity has proven to be a force powerful enough during this pandemic that it surely did not need their help, especially when so many lives are on the line.
