Jesse Watters mistakenly calls Democratic cities Covid hotspots

Fox News Personality Jesse watters insisted, “we have to get rid of all the politics and just try to get people to vaxx,” Friday afternoon, which would normally be a commendable comment. However, in this case, the call for a partisan ceasefire comment came just seconds after his bogus political attack that “every [Covid] the hot spots are in huge Democratic cities. They are not.

Bill Hemmer asked Watters if he knew that 45% of all New York City residents are unvaccinated, a rate comparable to the national average. “If you look at the map of the United States and show the hot spots, all the hot spots are in huge Democratic cities. New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, ”replied Watters. “Not a lot of Trump voters in these cities.”

“We have to get rid of all the politics and just try to make people vaxx,” he continued. “At some point, you have to stop. You can’t push people that hard.

But take a look at recent monitoring of Covid cases in New York Times, based on local data made public, and Watters is a long way off. Take a look at a map of US counties, the darker the color, the hotter the Covid point:

United States Covid Hotspot Map

It’s always difficult to gauge the intent behind this kind of misinformation on the most watched cable network. Is Watters really so uninformed and unaware of the current situation with Covid infections? Or is he aware and doesn’t care that his words are wrong because he is paid handsomely by a cable outlet eager to entertain an audience that seems to want to hear such information no matter how true it is.

The most charitable explanation for Watters’ comments is that he refers to the first wave of Covid-19 in the spring of 2020. Large metropolitan areas, with dense urban populations, actually had the highest infection rates . But that was well over a year ago, and since then the equation for the coronavirus pandemic has changed. Dramatically.

As the CDC made clear, this is now a pandemic of unvaccinated. Almost 99% of all hospitalizations are those who have so far refused the vaccine. The largest percentage of unvaccinated people are now found in “red states” such as Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. Infection rates in the “huge Democratic cities” cited by Watters, such as New York City, remain relatively low.

Watters’ commentary was not vetted by news anchors Hemmer and Dana perino, in large part due to the friendly tenor of the conversation. But misinformation is misinformation, and a news anchor should call it out when it is spoken on a news show, regardless of a friendly coworker saying it.

However, to Watters’ credit, he revealed that he and his wife received vaccines later in the segment and spoke encouragingly about how everyone else in America was getting the same.

Mediaite has contacted Fox News for comment but has not received a response. We’ll update the post if we do.

UPDATE 4:18 p.m. EST: Watters defended his comments through a spokesperson for Fox News:

“According to the latest CDC guidelines, fully vaccinated people should wear masks indoors in places where the CDC classifies as having” high “and” substantial “transmission rates. While ridiculous, this applies to almost every major metropolitan area in the United States… Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, St. Louis, etc. Plus, anyone with common sense understands that 3.5 million unvaccinated New York residents living within 300 square miles of each other are more of a so-called “hot spot,” than just 388,000 unvaccinated residents. vaccinees from Wyoming living within 98,000 square miles of each other. I’m just following the science.
