How the new Capitol police chief wants to fix a besieged force

I am very grateful that this police service did not wait for the hiring of a new chief to start working on these recommendations. [Acting] Chief [Yogananda D.] Pittman and the leadership of that ministry, they saw the recommendations from General HonorĂ©’s report and Inspector General’s report, and they’ve already done a lot to implement those recommendations. There are dozens and dozens of recommendations – maybe close to 100 when you count all the reports that have been written. You can categorize them into certain categories: training, staffing, policy, equipment. You can work on more than one of them simultaneously.

Look, it’s not like we lack courage and dedication. These men and women have it and posted it on January 6th. We have a lot of them. We just need to make sure that these men and women have the support, the equipment, and the training that the department needs to provide them, and they will get the job done.

You’ve run traditional police services in suburban Montgomery and Fairfax counties investigating thefts, performing roadside checks and answering 911 calls, all of which traditional police services do. But the Capitol police are unique. How do you see the agency transforming under your mandate?

You are quite right. Our mission is unique. Our responsibilities are different from those of a traditional police service in a town or village. But the point is, we serve the public. Our overall job is to ensure the safety of people. Managing protests and protecting dignitaries – I actually had some of these responsibilities on a smaller scale in previous jobs. I understand how this job is different, but there are things that are exactly the same. You have nearly 2,000 men and women who come to work every day and are responsible for ensuring the safety of a community. Making sure you hire the right people, giving people the training they need, making sure you hold people accountable – these are universal concepts, and it’s a big part of a manager’s job. police. In that regard, it is not entirely different from some of the responsibilities that I have had in the past.

But what makes this unique – the protective aspects of dignitaries – we have to look at what we’re doing and ask ourselves: do we need to improve it? Do we really need more people to do it right? So we’re not only going to look at the recommendations that come out of the Inspector General’s report, but I’m also listening to members of Congress and their staffs. What do they want? What are their expectations ? We have a lot of good information to get us started, but any police service in this country can improve by looking at itself from the inside.

For us, January 6 gave us the opportunity to be a better police service.

Will Acting Chief Pittman stay on and, if so, what role will she have?

Chef Pittman has done an incredible job since January 6. She’s the one who really paved the way for some of the improvements that need to be put in motion. And I’m really grateful for the good job she’s done over the past six months. If I was successful, she would continue to be part of my management team. I think she has so many great qualities.
