Following our previous reports, the Biden administration announced it would allow the end of the nationwide ban on evictions on Saturday, saying its hands were tied after the Supreme Court signaled it would only be extended until the end of the month.

The White House has said President Joe Biden would have liked to extend the federal moratorium on evictions due to the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, the Associated Press reports. Instead, Biden called on “Congress to extend the moratorium on evictions to protect these vulnerable tenants and their families without delay.”

The moratorium was put in place last September by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Given the recent spread of the Delta variant, including among Americans who are both most likely to be deported and lack vaccination, President Biden would have strongly supported a CDC decision to further extend this moratorium on evictions to protect tenants at this time of heightened vulnerability, ”the White House said. “Unfortunately, the Supreme Court made it clear that this option was no longer available.”

The court gathered a 5-4 majority last month to allow the deportation ban to continue until the end of July. One of the members of the majority, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, has made it clear that he will block any further extensions unless there is “clear and specific authorization from Congress.”

At the end of March, 6.4 million American households were behind on their rent, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. As of July 5, about 3.6 million people in the United States said they were at risk of deportation over the next two months, according to the US Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey.

Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in June that this would be the last time the moratorium would be extended when she set the deadline for July 31. It was initially put in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19 by people homeless and in shelters.

Housing advocates and some lawmakers have called for the moratorium to be extended due to the increase in coronavirus cases and the fact that so little rent assistance has been distributed.

“The confluence of the burgeoning Delta variant with 6.5 million families in arrears with rent and at risk of eviction when the moratorium expires demands immediate action,” said Diane Yentel, executive director of National Low Income Housing Coalition.

“The public health need for extended protections for tenants is obvious. If federal court cases made a large-scale expansion impossible, the Biden administration would have to implement all possible alternatives, including a more limited moratorium on federally backed properties. “

Some Democratic lawmakers had asked the administration to extend the moratorium.

“This pandemic is not behind us, and our federal housing policies should reflect this harsh reality,” Democratic Representatives Cori Bush of Missouri, Jimmy Gomez of California and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts said in a joint statement. “As the United States faces the most serious eviction crisis in its history, our local and state governments still need more time to distribute essential rental assistance to help keep a roof over their heads. the head of our voters. “

But the owners, who opposed the moratorium and repeatedly challenged it in court, were against any extension. They argued that the focus should be on accelerating the slow delivery of rental assistance.
