Climate change is an important issue to the planet and to us, the students of Great Falls Middle School. We need a healthy planet to grow up on.

Climate change is affecting everything and everyone. Global temperatures are increasing due to the human-created effects of climate change, resulting in large-scale shifts in weather patterns. Tropical storms are becoming more severe due to warmer ocean temperatures. Climate change has also increased wildfires and heat waves. It is causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise. It is also warming the ocean which can hurt sea life by destroying their habitats. Climate change is affecting humans through flooding, landslides and droughts.

Climate change is caused by greenhouse gas emissions. The main cause of greenhouse gas emissions is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. When burned, fossil fuels release carbon dioxide into the air, causing the planet to heat up. Agriculture, especially meat production, is another cause of greenhouse gases.

Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that you cause to enter the atmosphere due to your daily actions. You do many things everyday that add to your total carbon footprint. For example, driving to a grocery store that is only three minutes away may be a small example of burning fossil fuels, but it adds to your carbon footprint. When you leave a light on in your house, you’re using electricity which, unless your electricity comes from a renewable source like solar panels, contributes to climate change

There are many ways to reduce your carbon footprint:

Consider the way you eat. You can change your diet, such as adopting a pescatarian diet (which is a person who adds seafood to their vegetarian diet), a flexitarian diet (which is a style of eating but mostly plant-based foods) or choosing white over red meat. Reducing your food waste will also greatly reduce your carbon footprint.

Consider the way you shop. Choose to shop at your local stores to use less gas that pollutes our community. In addition, you could also plan ahead when going shopping and buy only necessary things that you will need.

Consider the way you get around. Go easy on the gas and brakes when driving a car. Use cruise control on long drives, which will help to save gas and reduce your carbon footprint. Moreover, another way to reduce carbon footprint is by taking public transportation like a train, a bus, carpooling, etc.

We should all take action, as a community because if we don’t, climate change will affect the world. Heat waves and flooding will become more frequent and severe around the world, affecting hundreds of millions, if not billions of people. There is no “planet B.’’ We must act now!
