It is startling and revealing that a Smith College professor could write an essay reminding us of the origin of the term genocide, yet in the list she gives us, curiously neglect to mention the mother of all examples. (“The unsung hero who coined the term ‘genocide,’” April 19)

For scope, lethality and persistence down many, many decades of the 20th century, it was progressives — engaged in building socialism — in the USSR, China, Eastern Europe, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba and Cambodia who slaughtered astronomical numbers. (For some reason, the columnist does mention The Khmer Rouge. It was headed by Pol Pot, who was recruited in Paris by the French Communist Party when he was supposed to be studying electronics. The Cambodian genocide was inevitable after the U.S. left Vietnam.)

Hitler and all of the other citations combined are just a patch on the estimated 80 million liquidated by communist regimes. They sought fewer, better and more cooperative citizens and annihilated on an industrial scale.

The Soviet political genocide estimate is 25 million over 70 years. As the empire was coming apart, there was a push for Nuremberg-type trials for the perpetrators. The country was far too busy being overjoyed and also in utter chaos, and the crimes were so vast and involved so many, that this important reckoning never happened.

The possibility for wide awareness of this holocaust was missed and got stuffed down what George Orwell called, “The memory hole.” The Nazis get all the attention and this almost seems like purposeful distraction. Look here, and forget about what happened over there.

The left’s long, shameful and delusionally clueless history of admiration for these regimes, explains the monumental lying — by omission — regarding the genocide practiced by every one of them. It is very embarrassing to try to explain why building socialism often leads to mass coercion and “cleansing” of those who disagree.

A further challenge is just asking the question, “why did most Soviet citizens live at about the American poverty rate?” Why doesn’t socialism work? The solution is pretending that it all never happened and thus avoid the post-mortem which might provide cautionary explanations.

When Ronald Reagan described the Soviet Union as an “Evil Empire,” my thinking was warped, manipulated and foolish enough to snort and snicker at his notion. I was to learn later that countless inhabitants of the Evil Empire actually thought, “thank God, that finally someone is telling the truth out loud.”

Luckily, there is an antidote to the willful blindness regarding these holocausts. Russian author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, called his book “The Gulag Archipelago” his “atomic bomb” indictement of the Soviet Union. Be careful if you read it, you will likely become a conservative. It happened to me on page 26.
