The guest column on Tuesday about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict confirms that there is no acknowledgement of Palestinian responsibility for any aspect of the conflict. To some people, the Palestinians are innocent victims of Israeli policy.

They ignore that the controlling authority in Gaza launched over 4,000 missiles into random areas of Israel. They did not target the Israeli military but instead made indiscriminate attacks on civilian populations. The lower numbers of Israeli casualties is a testimony to Israel’s preparedness, not Hamas’s intent.

Can you imagine the U.S. response if a group that opposed its policies launched missiles at it? What would the U.S. do if 4,000 missiles were launched into Texas, Arizona, Vermont or Wyoming? How about just one missile? It’s unlikely there would be a restrained response.

Even more fundamentally, the column challenges Israel’s right to exist in their reference to “Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories since 1948.” That was the year that the United Nations voted to establish the state of Israel, which was promptly attacked by its Arab neighbors.

So much for the Palestinians justifying their actions based on UN resolutions. The people who refer to 1948 as the beginning of the occupation reveal that their objection is not the violation of Palestinian rights but rather the very existence of Israel.

Hamas does not launch missiles and kill Israelis to protest policy. Their charter denies Israel’s right to exist and is committed to its destruction. They hide their military capacity in tunnels under civilian areas, making it certain that the Israeli response will hurt civilians. The deaths of women and children and the visible suffering are political assets to Hamas as it tries to elicit sympathy for their cause.

Unfortunately, there are people who are fooled by this. One can oppose Netanyahu’s policies but support Israel, as one can oppose Trump’s policies and support America. Forced evictions and uncontrolled settlements are both unfair and unwise. They do not, however, justify challenging a country’s right to exist nor launching a murderous attack on civilians.

Hamas has one goal and it is not a better life for Palestinians.
