The attack on American exceptionalism (“American exceptionalism — really?,” April 23) by Tom Weiner and Allen Davis dismisses the important role the U.S has played historically as a model for other countries.

There is no question that American self interests has led to the inappropriate meddling in the politics of other countries and we have often sided with ruthless dictators to serve those self interests. However all one has to do is look at the countries who lived under Soviet rule prior to its collapse to see the sharp differences with the U.S.

To dismiss the good the U.S has done in the world is unfair. Weiner and Davis list South Korea as one of America’s criminal interventions. How many South Koreans curse the day the U.S. intervened and wish they could be living like their brothers and sisters in North Korea? How many Afghan women are cursing the U.S. for intervening and can’t wait to return to life under the medieval rule of the Taliban?

As you travel the world you will find plenty of people who buy into the narrative that the CIA is behind all the evil in the world. However you can find just as many people who see the U.S., with all its flaws, as a shining model of democracy, human rights, free press, religious tolerance, women’s rights, LBGQT rights, and yes, a country in the midst of a struggle to deal with its history of racism.

Sadly, the last administration did a lot to tarnish that image as it sent the message to foreign leaders that their human rights record would play little role in their relationship with the U.S. This country and its historical figures are full of flaws. Honesty and introspection are important, but if we tear down every statue of a flawed leader and only teach our kids about America’s crimes, than I worry we will have nothing left to believe in.
