During this last year I have thought and heard a lot about the state of education during the pandemic, about how the lives of those who teach and those who are being taught have been impacted by COVID.

The idea of keeping a classroom running remotely seems daunting and indeed the demands on teachers and students alike are too high. Children have been asked to stay away from in-person learning and all the relationships that go with it, but also asked to show up day after day and stare at their screen in this entirely un normal circumstance.

The daily ritual of children showing up at school is more than just for education itself. It is about being out in the world, in a routine, learning social skills and building relationships, not just with peers but with those who teach and inspire as well. It’s about being seen by adults who are there to support them and ensure they are OK. COVID has interrupted the sacred process of learning in person.

For teachers the process of educating through online platforms is exhausting. Many are hunkered down in their own homes, some with their own children, also struggling along in this unique and arguably less than satisfying experiment. Teachers have had to manage learning new technology and face many new demands, all while trying to engage their students and competing with the distractions in students homes.

Students now managing more independent study are not visible to the community that would generally surround them. They are in their home, or a grandmothers home or a shelter or in a car parked where there is an internet connection. This new practice of education brought to all via the internet leaves gaping holes. Hopefully we will continue moving toward lowering the risk of COVID and be able to return students and teachers to full time, in-person learning safely.

It’s then we will be confronted with the fallout that the pandemic has created. I hope students and teachers will get the support they will certainly need so we can hope to save a generation of students many who have faced losses in education, health and development not seen in nearly 100 years.
