As a resident of the lower Valley, I’m very grateful for the Gazette — a local paper with a long, illustrious history — and that’s why I subscribe to it, and also why I’m deeply concerned about its current staff cuts and unresolved contract negotiations.

A paper is only as strong as its people, especially its reporters and photographers, but not just, also its section editors, copy editors, fact checkers, administrative assistants, etc. Reporters can’t do it all, not without sacrificing the quality of their work.

Good reporting — the kind that democracies require — takes time. It’s maybe easy to attend a public meeting, get a quote or two from officials, and write up a story, but that’s not the kind of reporting we the people need, and neither is it the kind of reporting that’s made the Gazette an award-winning paper.

Good reporting requires reporters to dig into the context and background of a story, to take the time to develop sources, and to talk to all those impacted, not just officials ready with a soundbite. That’s how we the people speak truth to power. Without deep reportage, we are at the mercy of power.

Too often businesses (the Gazette provides a public service, but it is a business) sacrifice long-term success for short-term gains. I hope Newspapers of New England is more strategic than that and instead decides to invest in its employees and the Gazette’s long-term success.
