Jared Kushner Wants to Be Taken Seriously. He Should Not Be

Former First Son-in-Law Jared Kushner is making a bid for post-Trump legitimacy with a sprawling op-ed in which he offers praise and a whole lot of unsolicited advice to President Joe Biden. Kushner is clearly seeking to style himself as a foreign policy statesman along the lines of a Zbigniew Brzezinski or a Henry Kissinger, but with chops that barely qualify him to write policy for the International House of Pancakes.

Published in the Wall Street Journal, the piece is a transparent attempt to launder slobbering praise of the Trump administration with trite and obvious analysis of the Biden administration’s path forward on China, Israel, and Iran, and to launder the thick layer of shame that four years in the Trump orbit has encased Kushner in like raw sewage.

But nobody should be helping him wash it off. Let it dry. Let it solidify. Let Kushner stand frozen in time as a monument to every unqualified blob of privilege who ever failed upward, leaving a swath of fetid wreckage in his path.

Kushner epitomized privileged nepotism even before he joined the White House, using his family wealth to climb to a perch as owner and publisher of a newspaper that would experience a rash of resignations when it endorsed Trump — whose family Kushner married into — for president.

But he took nepotism to 11 when he was named a senior White House adviser, and handed a portfolio of issues that would be daunting for an experienced hand, let alone a neophyte who lacks the gravity to avoid being upstaged by a lamp.

Kushner and First Daughter Ivanka Trump also came to symbolize complicity with a president who ripped migrant families apart, incited violence with overtly racist language and policies, and closed out his presidency by cheering on a violent insurrection that he sparked. The couple found a never-ending string of journalists willing to act as publicists by publishing blind quotes about how “concerned” they both were about these things, but thankfully there were few takers.

Kushner’s near-total silence on those sorts of issues during the Trump years was eclipsed only by his complete silence following the election, through the lengthy run-up to the insurrection, right through to this ill-advised statesman’s debutante ball.

But it was Kushner’s participation in the Trump administration’s disastrous and deadly response to the coronavirus that probably had the most tangible negative impact on Americans. Kushner was an influential voice in the background of a response that pushed misinformation, dangerous science, reckless policies, and public messaging that all contributed to the hellish death toll that now surpasses half a million Americans.

So far, a few outlets have bitten, giving Kushner’s praise for President Biden the attention he is so thirstily seeking — skeptically, in our case — but the gambit doesn’t seem to have paid off among the cable news networks, who have thus far resisted the urge to do PR work for Ivanka Trump’s husband. Let’s hope it stays that way.
