Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant’s absence due to a hamstring injury is turning into an extended one.

Durant will be sidelined through at least the All-Star break, the team announced on Friday after a follow-up MRI on his left hamstring.

“The latest images provided a clearer picture of the hamstring and while we are confident that Durant will return at full strength, this extra recovery time will allow him to perform at the level at which he has been playing this season once he returns,” the team said in a statement. “Durant will continue to undergo rehabilitation and will be re-assessed following the break.”

Two weeks ago, the team said Durant would miss last at least two games. He has missed six games since the initial announcement and will miss at least three more before the All-Star break. Brooklyn is scheduled to resume play on March 11 against Boston. If he’s available, that will mark four weeks between games played for Durant.

The Nets announced that Kevin Durant will be out with a hamstring injury through at least the All-Star break.

“We’re optimistic that it’s not a long-term thing. But we couldn’t put a timetable on it,” Nets coach Steve Nash told reporters last week. “We still have to monitor it. It’s sore still. So we have to see how it settles and what kind of strength he can develop in it, and that’s only going to happen when it’s ready.”

The Nets have reason to be extra cautious with Durant, who is in his first season back after sustaining a ruptured right Achilles tendon in Game 5 of the 2019 Finals. Durant had surgery, signed with Brooklyn in free agency in the summer 2019 and missed all of last season rehabbing.

In 19 games this season, Durant averages 29 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists and is shooting 52.4% from the field and 43.4% on 3-pointers. He was voted an All-Star starter by fans, media and players.

The Nets are 22-12, winners of six consecutive games and are a ½ game behind first-place Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference.
