It’s not clear if it’s wilful disinformation on display or a more deeply seeded psychological delusion, but the disconnection between reality and what is portrayed on Fox News prime time is a chasm that is impossibly growing larger.
The latest example? Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, showing up on Hannity in his first television appearance since a deadly insurrection was led on the Capitol by supporters of his father on Jan. 6.
Eric Trump’s comments weren’t qualitatively different than almost every other Fox News appearance during the Trump administration. He hit the same glowing notes in the manner of a child seeking the love of a distant father with hyperbolic praise.
Almost every kid is proud of his or her parents, and the loving pride on display is to be expected. But his comment that there “has never been a more beloved political figure in our country’s history,” is simply not true.
Yes, Trump received 74 million votes, but he lost the election to President Joe Biden, who despite being derided as the “worst candidate in history” by Trump, received over 81 million votes.
After losing the election, Trump was so unwilling to admit defeat that he immediately spun the lie that he had actually won but the results were rigged and a second term had been stolen from him. His supporters so fervently believed this dangerous lie, that they invaded the capitol in an effort to overturn the Electoral College certification which cost five lives, including one Capitol Police Officer.
Curiously, while Sean Hannity and Eric Trump were discussing the many layers of greatness possessed by former President Trump, Officer Brian Sicknick—who was killed by Trump supporters—was lying in state, a somber ceremony covered live by CNN and MSNBC, but largely ignored by Fox News.
Oh, and there are also the various polls at the end of Trump’s presidency that show him with among the lowest approval ratings in history. So most beloved political figure? Maybe within the Trump family and certain quarters of Fox News. But in US history? GTFO.
