Dangerous quads and scramblers will be banned from our roads and will be strictly regulated off-road under new laws.

And the loophole that sees safe electric scooters outlawed will be closed, allowing commuters to officially use them on public roads for the first time.

Government Chief Whip Jack Chambers got approval for the new laws from his fellow ministers at this week’s Cabinet meeting.

Terrible accidents have seen young teenagers lose their lives on dangerous quads and scramblers in recent years, including young Dub, Ryan Nagle (13), last April.

The legislation to crack down on them is now being fast-tracked and is part of the Government’s spring legislative programme.

This means a new law is being prioritised ahead of a long list of proposed legislation and will be passed by the Dáil in the coming months.

Ryan Nagle lost his life in April when he crashed the quad-bike he had just gotten for Christmas the December before last.

The small community of Castlemaine in Kerry were in shock following the tragic death of the teenager.

Ryan died a week after the quad-bike accident on April 16th.

He was airlifted to the Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin following the accident.

He bravely fought for his life for a week, but tragically passed away from his serious injuries.

It is hoped the new laws will see no more families lose children through needless accidents like this.

Mr Chambers said last night: “The Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill will deliver a raft of reforms in the sector including a new motor insurance database.

“The use of e-scooters will also be regulated and new laws will be introduced to tackle the scourge of scramblers bikes being operated in a dangerous manner in communities across the country.”
