Gardai have shared details of an identity swap case that saw a woman caught at the wheel of a taxi registered to a man.

When officers from the Garda Commercial Vehicle Unit stopped a taxi, they hardly expected to discover that the driver had a different name – and gender – to the person registered to operate it.

But that’s indeed what they found, with the car seized as a result of the fraudulent use of the taxi.

A tweet from the Gardai reads: “The Garda Commercial Vehicle Unit stopped this taxi, where it transpired that the Taxi licence did not match the woman driving the car, as it was for a man!

“The car was seized. Proceedings to follow.”

The seizure came amid a heavy police presence on Irish roads due to Covid-19.

Officers are operating checkpoints around the country to ensure public compliance with Level Five restrictions – which mean people can travel only 5km from home.

And if things seem strict now, they might be about to get even worse: Cabinet will meet today to decide on further restrictions for schools, construction and foreign travel.

Yesterday, the Taoiseach suggested the Government is unlikely to reintroduce a 2km travel limit and hinted that schools are likely to be closed until at least the end of January.

Micheal Martin said that opening schools – which will see “a million people on the go” on the way in and out of classrooms – represents a big problem when it comes to curbing the spread of the virus.

But he said reducing the 5km travel radius – a measure mooted by Green Party leader Eamon Ryan – is “not on the agenda.”

“We believe that the 5km is quite a restrictive measure on people, and we’re very conscious of psychological health, mental health – the wellbeing of people,” he told RTE’s News at One.
