Like many of your subscribers, I was sorry to read about the Gazette’s staff reductions. I understand that unavoidable financial pressures lead to hard choices.
However, I was surprised that the article about your layoffs and buyouts said nothing about what editor in chief Brooke Hauser has accomplished during her two and a half years as the Gazette’s editor. These accomplishments include adding a Holyoke beat, increasing diversity in the paper’s coverage, redesigning its logo, and responding nimbly — under very difficult circumstances — to the events of the last year, which included both COVID-19 and the Valley’s responses to the Black Lives Matter movement.
This year the New England Newspaper & Press Association recognized the Gazette as a “Distinguished Newspaper” and honored it with two “Publick Occurrences” awards. I am grateful to Brooke Hauser for maintaining the Gazette’s excellence during one of the most challenging periods in its 234-year history. She deserves a more respectful sendoff.
