Sessions died of a heart attack on Monday the statement revealed. The comedian was well known for his performances in Channel 4 improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway? He also provided voices for Spitting Image in the 1980s.

Born in Scotland, Sessions moved to Bedford in England at the age of three.

After briefly studying for a PhD in Canada he returned to the UK to attend RADA where he met Kenneth Brannagh.

In the 1980s Sessions tourned the comedy circuit with his stand-up routine.

Sessions then began working in radio where he and Stephen Fry were regulats on the original radio broadcast of Whose Line Is It Anyway?

He remained on the show when it transitioned to TV where Clive Andreson presented the show on Channel 4.

He also starred in QI on BBC2 and wrote and appeared in Stella Street.

Danny Baker wrote: “Shocked to hear that John Sessions has died at 67. Terrific company always and a true talent. His roles at the heart of this, my favourite radio series, have given endless pleasure to me and will continue to do so always. Travel easy, chum…”

Peep Show’s Robert Webb said: “Bobby Ball and now John Sessions! Two very different performers who both absolutely inspired and delighted me at different times. Lovely, funny men.”

A tweet from the team behind panel show QI said: “John Sessions was a panellist on QI’s first ever episode: Series A, Episode One, ‘Adam’.

“His incredible wit and encyclopaedic knowledge played a huge part in the show’s history and everyone at QI is deeply saddened to learn of his passing.”

A Eurosceptic, Sessions gave his support to the UK Independence Party (UKIP) in 2014 when he said: “I get so bored with people going, ‘UKIP are a bunch of racists.’ They’re nothing of the kind.

“Nigel Farage talks more sense than the rest of the politicians put together. The United States of Europe is madness.”

He was also vocal about Scottish independence demands and called for the abolition of national parliaments in the UK.

Sessions was also a critic of the BBC’s ‘management culture’.

While promoting BBC2 drama We’re Doomed! The Dad’s Army Story in 2015 he said: “I don’t want to sound like some whinging old luvvie, but the management culture at the BBC has become so pervasive and so money-monopolising that we are all doing these things on ridiculous schedules.

“This is a public broadcasting corporation – not a PLC – and the more it is treated like a corporation the better it will be and more chance it will have of surviving.”

He said the BBC management tumour down had ”got completely out of hand”.

A statement from Alex Irwin of Markham, Froggatt & Irwin said: “It is with great sadness we can confirm that on Monday 2nd November, the actor John Sessions died at his home in South London. He will be hugely missed.”
