At least four people were injured by fireworks on Halloween night and a number of arrests were made after a week that saw a 300% increase in call-outs to bonfires.

Fire services had one of their busiest nights of the year, despite many staying indoors due to coronavirus health restrictions and bad weather brought by Storm Aiden.

Last week Dublin City Council said it had received three times as many call-outs to bonfires as it had in 2019.

A Dublin Fire Brigade spokesperson said on Halloween night: “Our firefighter and paramedics have been called to four people injured as a result of fireworks.

“We’ve treated them for hand, eye and facial injuries.

“Fireworks are genuinely dangerous and sadly we always see injuries from them on Halloween night.”

By early evening firefighters had responded to 132 incidents around Dublin, including bonfires close to houses in Citywest and Raheny.

Shocking footage showed a night of chaos in Belcamp, north Dublin.

A man in his 30s was arrested after throwing an object and damaging the windscreen of a garda patrol van shortly after midnight.

Firefighters from Kilbarrack Fire Station had rushed to the scene following reports of four cars set ablaze.

Video footage showed a large number of officers with shields storming the area following reports of disturbances involving a group of youths and illegal fires.

Elsewhere in north Dublin, five fire trucks dealt with a massive blaze at a warehouse in Santry, caused by a bonfire.

Train services near Harmonstown, north Dublin, were stopped for a time after trees and plants were set alight by fireworks.

But Dublin Fire Brigade said most fires required no intervention and its crews experienced very little anti-social behaviour.

On Sunday morning DFB tweeted: “C Watch have finished their night duty after a busy Halloween.

“All of our firefighters and paramedics got to go home safe to their families, no injuries reported.”

Cork City Fire Brigade had to extinguish the car

A man in his 40s was hospitalised following an assault in Dublin city centre on Halloween night.

Gardai are investigating the incident that occurred a little after 9pm on Synge Street in Dublin 8.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Meanwhile in Cork city, crews from Ballyvolane station dealt with a raging car fire during the night.

Video clips circulating on social media showed crowds of teenagers jumping on a car before it was set alight in an area of Togher known locally as “the Wella”.

The incident followed reports of a large gang of youths staging running battles with fireworks.

Bad fire in Kells, Meath

A man in his 20s was arrested after Gardai responded to reports of serious anti-social behaviour in the Tramore Road area.

Cork City Fire Brigade said: “We had to send crews from Ballyvolane Station to deal with the burning car – on a night when Storm Aiden put severe pressures on our emergency services.”

One eye-witness told CorkBeo that a large gang of youths had been setting off “tonnes of fireworks” in the area and flames and smoke from the burning car were seen by many residents.

Gardai are also investigating the cause of a fire in Co Meath, after a business suffered extensive damage on Saturday night.

The fire brigade was called to a raging inferno at the Co-Op Creamery in Oldcastle after 7pm.

Meath West TD Johnny Guirke shared footage of the blaze.

The Sinn Fein Deputy said: “It’s sad to see a local business in flames on Halloween night, many people could lose their jobs and if this was started maliciously which puts our local firemen at risk, I would hope that the Gardai can get to the bottom of this fire.”

The Gardai’s Operation Tombola saw quantities of fireworks and bonfire materials like wooden pallets and tyres seized in the run-up to Halloween.
