Ireland is still battling to come to grips with the coronavirus pandemic as we endure another week under Level Five restrictions.

The number of cases confirmed each day continues to worry, with hospital admissions staying high.

However, it’s important to remember that it isn’t all bad news, and there are some reasons to be optimistic as we head into a difficult winter.

Here are some more positive stories to emerge in recent days:

Ireland’s R number drops below 1

Stephen Donnelly

Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that Ireland’s R number has dropped below 1 for the first time since the lockdown began. The minister for Health also told the Health Committee that there were positive signs in recent days in relation to the number of COVID-19 cases.

Mr Donnelly said that the 14-day incidence rate is now 228 cases per 100,000 compared to 278 in the previous 14-day period.

The Fianna Fail TD also said the virus rate is falling in 23 of the 26 counties and that the average number of close contacts has fallen from six to around three.

The testing positivity rate has also fallen to 4.7%.

There’s a ‘small chance’ that the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine will be ready by Christmas

Christmas Shoppers on Grafton Street in Dublin.

Vaccine trial chief investigator Andrew Pollard told the Science and Technology Committee that he is “optimistic” the University of Oxford trial could present late-stage results, possibly revealing whether it works, before the end of the year.

When asked if the vaccine would be ready by Christmas, he said: “There is a small chance of that being possible but I just don’t know. Our trials are only one of many that are going on around the world, a number of which may well report before the end of the year.

Mr Pollard was speaking to MPs at a joint hearing of the science and health committees of the House of Commons.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is expected to be one of the first to be submitted for regulatory approval, along with Pfizer and BioNTech’s candidates.

Quarantine free travel for some people

Dublin Airport during the coronavirus pandemic

For those with family and friends that are living abroad, the government’s decision to ease up on the quarantine restrictions will be welcome news. As for Sunday, passengers from some EU states will not have to quarantine on arrival in the Republic from next week once they have a test showing that they are Covid-19 negative.

The Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, announced that the Government will be adopting the EU “traffic-light” system for travel from Sunday night.

This means that Ireland will waive the need for those arriving from areas graded as “orange” under this system to self-isolate for 14 days, once they confirm they have tested negative for Covid-19 up to three days before coming here.
