James Boddy of Northampton mentioned that he has many family members attending schools in person in England. Ironically, shortly after I read his letter, this article appeared in The Guardian, a British news source: “Near breaking point: headteachers worn down by nonstop Covid crisis,” by Liz Lightfoot, 10/3/20.
Needless to say, as an educator, continuing to do my job, as required, and providing outstanding educational opportunities to my students in a remote setting, I am doing so based on science and data. I will continue to do so as long as we continue to be governed in this state by leaders (I am talking about the governor and the education commissioner) who will not give us a clear, concise and actionable road map to follow, or adequate funding to make the changes necessary to update and outfit our buildings in order to make them safe to return to.
Finally, I am thankful that I belong to a union, Massachusetts Teachers Association, that has the safety of the commonwealth’s students and staff foremost in its words and actions.
