As I go about my somewhat “normal” activities in this crisis pandemic situation, almost always wearing my mask, I realize that a lot of people out there didn’t read J.M. Sorrell’s piece earlier this month (“Empathy and lost innocence,” Sept. 2).

I always read her work ever since she wrote a great piece about Elizabeth Warren — to whom I was totally devoted, and still am. I appreciate Sorrell’s distinctly original viewpoints, which resonate with me, as opposed to the usual Valley “attitude” that persists even in these dreadful times. Undaunted, unabashed positivity has never been my failing.

So now I always wear the mask, and every time I see somebody pass me by without a mask, I’m doubly glad I’m wearing mine.

I would like to remind readers what Sorrell said about COVID-19, repeating scientist Bill Nye, who says the virus is like a piece of popcorn dropped into a glass of maple syrup. He says that people need to be 30 feet from others if outside and maskless. Wow, what a great analogy, however terrifying it is to think that each microscopic particle of live virus is that sticky in the air that surrounds us — hanging in that air and possibly clinging to your hair like a toxic viper ready to strike it’s unsuspecting victim.

So every time I venture out, fully conscious of the risk I am taking with my very life, I make sure I am wearing a mask and make a silent novena to my formerly discarded Catholic Gods and Goddesses. If everyone read Sorrell’s piece, if everyone in this incredibly ignorant country had some wits left about them, and if there was somehow a sentient being in charge, we might do nearly as well as some of the other so-called “civilized,” “advanced” societies around the world that have nearly eradicated the virus.

And if anyone thinks I exaggerate, be informed here that an estimated 250,000 new cases of COVID have already been linked to the famed Sturgis Motorcycle Rally held last month in South Dakota. God bless our Happy Valley and all of it’s well-intentioned alarmists!
