In his guest column, David Zimicki opined on Joe Biden’s purported “language problems,” without mentioning the well-publicized fact that Biden has waged a lifelong battle with a stutter. (“There is no such thing as ‘Joe being Joe,’” Sept. 8).

Zimicki touts the president’s “judgment” on the coronavirus, citing his “travel ban.” In fact, those restrictions were limited; nearly 40,000 people flew here on direct flights from China in the two months after the “ban,” and many more via indirect itineraries. And Biden never condemned the restrictions; he simply stated that no travel ban would stop the virus from wreaking havoc on our country — and he was right.

Biden has called the president xenophobic, observing generally that this pandemic is “no time for Donald Trump’s record of hysteria and xenophobia … to lead the way instead of science.” Time vindicated that comment, too.

And like many Trump defenders, Zimicki points to zero examples of the president’s good judgment since the January travel restrictions; that silence is a testament to the tragic incompetency of this administration’s pandemic response over the last eight months.

Finally, Zimicki’s column rings hollow, because he clearly doesn’t actually care about the “problematic behavior” with which he — example-free — smears Biden. He claims Biden is prone to “impulsivity,” when Trump has made abrupt foreign policy decisions (like withdrawing from Syria), leaving our officials, agencies and allies scrambling.

He accuses Biden of “irritable outbursts,” yet Trump berates reporters who challenge him and lashes out at critics ranging from Gold Star parents to the late Sen. John McCain. He calls Biden “creepy,” as Trump spends government resources to defend against a lawsuit by a woman he allegedly raped (one of 25 women to accuse him of sexual misconduct).

He claims Biden engages in “confabulation,” when Trump has lied over 20,000 times during his tenure, often about things that are easily disproved. And if Zimicki thinks Biden’s speech is “rambling” “gibberish,” has he seen the two recent interviews wherein the current president was unable to coherently articulate anything about his second-term agenda?

If Zimicki was truly troubled by impulsivity, outbursts, creepiniess, lying, or rambling gibberish — he’d be calling for the president’s resignation.
