Thousands of businesses and homes left without power as Storm Ellen brings severe flooding


Thousands of homes and businesses across the country have been left without power as Storm Ellen batters the nation.

Nearly 2,000 people have been affected by massive power outage in Co. Cork as the Rebel County is severely hit by the dangerous weather conditions, According to ESB power check.

A total of 1864 people have lost their power in Fermoy as a result of the severe weather conditions.

The outage was first reported at around 9.30pm on Wednesday evening however it’s expected the power will be restored at 1.15 am on Thursday morning.

There has also been reports in the Bishopstown and Glanmire areas.

Meanwhile there have been reports of lightning in Skibbereen as the town has also been hit with severe flooding.

Elsewhere power cuts have been reported in Athenry in Galway and Templemore Co Tipperary.

A status red warning is currently in place for Cork as the Rebel County is set to be smashed by the wrath of Storm Ellen with wind speeds of 130km/h expected.

Orange and Yellow warnings are currently in place for the rest of the country.

The Road Safety Authority has also appealed to road users to exercise caution over the next few days.



Power cuts have been reported across the country

A spokesman said: “This is an exceptional storm for August – people should take account of any Met √Čireann weather warnings affecting their location.”

Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien added: “Many people are away on holidays in coastal counties at this time.

“They might not be familiar with the area and need to stay back from the coast so that they can remain safe.”

Meanwhile, people holidaying or living on campsites and caravan parks were warned to seek alternative accommodation.

Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said: “Met Eireann have issued a status red severe wind warning for Cork.

“People should take Storm Ellen seriously – if you’re in a campsite or caravan park, go home or prepare appropriately.

“Listen to warnings and alerts on the media and from local authorities.”
