The Walking Dead: Tom Payne opens up on ‘angst’ surrounding Jesus’ death and exit  | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The Walking Dead’s Jesus was stabbed by an unknown member of the Whisperers last year and left fans devastated when he suffered a tragic end. The character was given an untimely send-off, which proved to be a fairly controversial move after three years on the drama. However, Jesus actor Tom has admitted he was “happy” with the way he exited the show, after being given a “really cool death”.

Jesus famously suffered a grisly fate back in season nine after being killed in the midseason finale of season nine.

His lifeless body was carried to the graveyard, with Aaron (Ross Marquand) ramming a knife into his head moments after to prevent reanimation.

Speaking in an interview with Express.co.uk amid his current role of Malcolm Bright in Prodigal Son, Tom gave some thoughts about his time on the series.

Reflecting on his exit, he said: “I think in a weird way – not in a weird way – I think it worked out really well and everything kind of happened when it was supposed to.”

He continued: “I was very happy with it actually, I was happy with how it ended.

“I’m happy that I got to start season nine and meet some of the wonderful new actors that came on board and, and I’m happy with the way that it ended, I am.

“All I said was ‘I want him to have a really cool death,’ and they definitely gave me a really cool death!”

The star gave some further insight about the “surprise” process which saw him bag the role in the first place.

“The whole thing was a big surprise to me. And I wasn’t expecting… When I auditioned, I didn’t know the character I was auditioning for.

“When I got the part, I was like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s a big surprise. This guy’s kind of a big deal in the comic books!’

“I went to Atlanta, made some wonderful friends and I had a great time!” he said.

Tom is currently starring opposite Michael Sheen in Prodigal Son, which is airing in the UK on Sky, after being released in the US last year.

Detailing what it’s like working alongside Michael, Tom opened up about how he felt when he found out he’d got the part.

He said: “Honestly, one of the first things when I found that I got the job – I was jumping around with excitement in my living room because of working with Michael!

“Because I knew those scenes that we have together are just, from an actor’s point of view, just such fun scenes and real acting.

“It’s so fun to just put two actors in a box – pretty much what happens – to put two actors in a room, with a huge amount of backstory and an emotional undercurrent and just let the scene play out. So I was tremendously excited to be here!”

The Walking Dead season 10 finale will be airing on October 4 on AMC and later on FOX UK and Prodigal Son is on Tuesdays at 9pm on Sky One and NOW TV.
