CCTV cameras in toilets at Dublin Airport McDonald's removed following complaint

Two CCTV cameras installed in the toilets of the McDonald’s restaurant at Dublin Airport have been removed following a complaint to the Data Protection Commission.

The complainant highlighted concerns about the security feature as both cameras were located by the doors of the toilet area in the store.

When the restaurant was contacted by the commission, the fast-food giant took their advice and removed both devices.

The complainant was also informed that the commission would continue to liaise with the franchise and its store in relation to the operation of CCTV at its  Dublin Airport  franchise.

A McDonald’s spokesman told Dublin Live that the cameras were installed to combat rising levels of anti-social behaviour inside the airport restaurant’s toilet facilities.

He said: “The installation of security equipment was to deter acts of vandalism and other anti-social behaviour within the restaurant toilets. Signage was displayed to alert customers to the presence of the cameras.

“A decision was taken to remove the  equipment from McDonald’s Dublin Airport Drive-thru restaurant in January 2020.”
