The French are being urged to eat more cheese after sales begin to slump amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The country’s National Council of Appellations of Dairy Origin said Monday that the pandemic has created a massive overstock of more than 2,000 tons of cheese including brie, munster, roquefort which are among the most at risk of spoiling. Emergency measures allowed the stock to be reduced by half, “but that is not enough,” the group said.

“Beyond the risk of causing immense waste, the sustainability of a sector is at stake and this could have major consequences for rural areas, for which this sector is often the only economic activity to be expected,” the group said in the release that is part of a campaign to encourage the French to support the industry.

The group said that 80% of cheeses have a shelf life of eight weeks or less and if the excess isn’t eaten, it’ll be destroyed.

Cheese sales have slumped by 60% from the start of the lockdown on March 17 to April 10, Michel Lacoste, the president of the council, told CNN Thursday. He estimated that 5,000 tons of overstock could be leftover by the end of the pandemic.

“So eat cheese, make a fair trade act to maintain the French culture, the French tradition, the French heritage, that we all share,” he said.
