Candidate for Hadley Board of Health makes her case

Published: 5/1/2020 3:37:58 PM

My name is Susan Mosler and I am running for a seat on the Board of Health in Hadley.

I am a board-certified internist and have been a practicing physician for over 35 years. My interest in serving on the Board of Health comes from a desire to contribute to the health and general well-being of all the residents of Hadley.

The board has many responsibilities, including emergency preparedness, food safety and reviewing applications for permits to conduct a range of activities in town.

During times of public health emergencies, such as the present pandemic, the board is charged with ensuring that the town is in compliance with all federal and state orders, and with creating specific policies to address the public health threat on a local level.

As a physician I am well positioned to work with our town officials to ensure that we are in compliance with governmental regulations and orders, as well as to create local policies to ensure that we are all protected to the extent that is possible.

Once we are in a position to reopen our businesses in Hadley, let’s do it the right way. For example, we have approximately 150 licensed food vendors in Hadley, but less than 40% have had the inspections mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in the last year. In addition, the Board of Health records are not kept on a computerized database, and as a result are often inaccessible to the residents, inspectors and contractors needing information from these records.

Moving forward into the “new normal,” let’s professionalize and modernize our Health Department and work together to enhance public safety for everyone. I am on the ballot for our election on May 16, and I would be honored to have your vote.
