ICUs on Rails: How France Coped With a Surge of Coronavirus Patients

PARIS—When coronavirus patients flooded hospitals in eastern France in March, swiftly filling up intensive care units, doctors sounded the alarm: They were running out of beds and would have to start refusing care.

“That is when we realized that transferring patients might save us,” said Yannick Gottwalles, head of emergency medicine at a hospital in Colmar, near the German border.
