You, too, can prevent COVID-19 deaths

America’s previous crises this century left most average citizens feeling largely like helpless bystanders. After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, President George W. Bush advised Americans to … go shopping. And after the 2008 financial crash, the response was primarily the purview of government officials, financiers and market forces well beyond the reach of ordinary people.

The COVID-19 outbreak — which triggered a cascade of shutdowns, cancellations, quarantines and stock market swoons that continued Thursday — is admittedly different. It’s personal. This is your chance to make a difference in the trajectory of the disease.

While mitigating the outbreak will depend heavily on the good work of health care professionals and government officials, it also requires ordinary people to play their part.
