We're back from Paris and in self quarantine

Robert E. Lang

My wife, my son and I were sleeping at a Paris hotel early Thursday morning when my iPhone began to ping. About 10 texts came within minutes of President Donald Trump’s Wednesday night speech on the coronavirus. They all carried the same urgent message —Trump was going to shut down travel between the United States and Europe by midnight Friday. Our problem was immediate. We had return tickets home to Las Vegas for Sunday.

We were in France on business. My wife, Karen, and I are professors of urban affairs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. We were invited by the French university SciencesPo to participate in a forum that compared suburbs in New York, London, and Paris. I gave a talk on New York’s suburbs, while Karen recorded the event for later publication in Opolis, an academic journal on suburbs studies that she edits.
