The Recorder - Save our friends, the trees

Published: 3/16/2020 10:39:02 AM

Thank you, Bill McKibben, for your “My Turn” on March 3 bringing to our attention two bills pending in the Massachusetts legislature designating all Massachusetts state conservation land or parks or reserves with protection similar to national parks. Those parks are guided primarily by natural processes, and carbon storage is optimized.

One bill is H.897 sponsored by my representative, Susannah Whipps. The other bill H.853, sponsored by Rep. Denise Provost, ensures that Massachusetts renewable energy subsidies are directed to truly clean energy such as wind, solar, and geothermal rather than burning wood. Thank you, Susannah and Denise!

Especially important for me is the recognition we need to protect our natural forests, as the natural forests absorb and store carbon so essential to fighting climate change.

I join McKibben in opposing the Baker administration’s seeking to expand subsidies for wood burning in Massachusetts ratepayer-funded renewable energy programs. Please let our elective officials hear from us to save our friends the trees.
