Public Services Cards not needed to access Covid payment for people that lose their jobs

PEOPLE who lose their jobs due to the coronavirus crisis do not need Public Services Cards (PSC) to access the special €203-per-week Covid pandemic payment.

he government has suspended the issuing of new PSCs amid the massive demand on staff and the need to reduce office-based appointments to aid social distancing.

Senior Department of the Taoiseach official Liz Canavan made the announcement this morning.

She said there has been unprecedented demand for social welfare service and the authentication of identity as part of the issuing of PSCs is coming under pressure.

The government is also said to be mindful of the need for social distancing and as a result office-based appointments for the cards have been suspended with immediate effect.

If anyone needs a PPS number they can apply directly to the department via an email.

New PSCs won’t be issued but people can renew existing cards or seek a replacement if one is lost.

Ms Canavan said: “Anyone who needs to access the Covid payment without a card can do so without a card and a verification process will take place later.”

The Covid payment is available to all employees and the self-employed who have lost employment due to a downturn in economic activity caused by the pandemic.

The payment has a simple one-page application form and will be paid for a period of six weeks at a flat rate payment of €203 per week for jobseekers.
