Non-salaried school personnel should be paid

Schools should continue to pay non-salaried employees with the money already budgeted for that purpose. Snow days and budgeted breaks are one thing. It’s another matter to indefinitely terminate the wages of struggling families and divert that money to other purposes.

Schools are saving money currently on utilities, food, fuel and printing supplies. They should keep paying bus drivers, cafeteria workers, tutors and anyone else they normally employ by the hour.

The financial stability of the local working population, many of whom have children in the school system, should be a high priority. If (as seems likely) it becomes necessary to operate the schools through the summer, emergency funds should then be requested to meet that contingency.
