'Must/Can't' ends with a whimper

Cynthia Erivo as Holly and Ben Mendelsohn as Ralph in the season finale of

Spoiler alert! The following contains details from the Season 1 finale of “The Outsider,” “Must/Can’t.”

That was it?

The Season 1 finale of “The Outsider,” which, despite covering the end of the Stephen King novel on which it’s based absolutely leaves the door open for a Season 2, was a bit of an underwhelming affair. To resolve the cliffhanger that ended last week’s episode, “Must/Can’t” used up all its violence, tension and excitement in the opening scenes, resulting in an episode that climaxed at the start and then twiddled its thumbs for 45 minutes. Worse: Despite an excruciating amount of exposition, the audience really didn’t get the answers we wanted about El Cuco, Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo) or the greater supernatural world suggested by the series.

“Outsider” has great actors, a compelling premise and plenty of atmosphere, but the follow through wasn’t there for the characters or the plot. And so the ending, while essentially good enough to tie a bow on the murder of young Frankie Peterson and the false accusations against Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), it’s not good enough to lift “Outsider” into the upper echelons of King adaptations
