Man (28) due in court this morning after discovery of cannabis growhouse in Mayo worth €250,000


A man (28) is due to appear in court this morning after being charged in connection with the discovery of a cannabis grow house in Mayo yesterday.

he man will appear before Castlebar District Court this morning at 10.30am.

He was arrested yesterday after approximately €250,000 worth of cannabis herb, subject to analysis, was seized during a search at an industrial premises in Claremorris town in Co Mayo.

The unit was converted into a grow house for large scale production and over 300 cannabis plants were seized.

The man was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in Mayo.

The raid was conducted by gardaí from the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit and Armed Support Unit, who were assisted by the Claremorris Community Engagement Team after a search warrant was obtained under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.

The seized cannabis is estimated to be worth €250,000.

Community Engagement Superintendent Gabriel Moran said: “The impact of drugs on families and the cost of paying to support a drugs habit feeds into crime levels and fear in families in the county.”

He said that gardaí will continue to focus on crime despite coronavirus challenges.

“Our community and also those involved in crime should know that despite our clear focus on supporting communities as we address the challenges of Covid-19, gardaí in Mayo and across the country will continue to investigate crime and target those selling drugs in our communities.”

He asked for the public’s help in notifying gardaí about those involved in the drugs trade.

“An Garda Síochána appeals to anyone who has information about those who are involved in the supply or sale of drugs to speak to their local Garda, contact their local Garda Station or to call the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111,” he said.
