Donovan Mitchell's father, Mets employee, tests negative

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Donovan Mitchell Sr., the Mets’ director of player relations and community engagement, tested negative for coronavirus, the team announced on Friday night.

His son, Donovan Mitchell, is one of two Utah Jazz NBA stars who tested positive for COVID-19.

Among other things, Donovan Mitchell Sr. helps the Mets coordinate player appearances and special visits and has been in Port St. Lucie throughout parts of spring training.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen will hold a conference call at noon ET on Saturday with members of the media to provide updates. It is assumed that he will discuss the team’s plan of action.

Among the topics likely to be included:

  • Are players and staff staying at the spring training complex?
  • What did MLB tell the Mets about the two-week delay and when the schedule might be picked up?
  • How will the Mets keep their players ready during this layoff?
