'Doctor Who' alum Matt Lucas joins 'Great British Baking Show' as host

The “Great British Baking Show” has found a new host.

Matt Lucas will replace Sandi Toksvig, who announced in January she would be leaving the reality baking competition (known as “The Great British Bake Off” in the U.K.)  after three years to focus on other projects.

“When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family. Unusually I am departing from the Great British Bake off so I can spend more time with my other work,” Toksvig wrote in a statement at the time. “As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all consuming show.”

Lucas, 46, is known for memorable acting roles in “Bridesmaids,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Doctor Who.”

“If my mum came along (to the show), she would just follow me around going, ‘Matt, don’t eat that, Matt, don’t. I’m serious, don’t,’ ” he joked in an announcement video posted Wednesday.

A news release from Britain’s Channel 4 announcing Toksvig’s exit quipped that it was looking for a replacement with a very particular resume: “Candidates must have experience of mopping up spills and the occasional tear, making tea and keeping the amateur bakers to time.”

The rest of the “British Baking” team cheered on Lucas’ arrival on social media.

Judge Prue Leith wondered if the team would be able to “stop laughing long enough to get enough filming done” with the combination of Lucas and co-host Noel Fielding.

“I’m a genuine fan of Matt’s, he’s a fantastic addition to the team and I can’t wait to start working with him,” judge Paul Hollywood tweeted.
