Coronavirus: Australian Grand Prix called off

The Australian Grand Prix is the second race to be called off due to coronavirus concerns

This weekend’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix has been called off over coronavirus concerns, two senior F1 sources have told BBC Sport.

There has been no official confirmation as yet from F1 or governing body the FIA but the news follows a McLaren team member testing positive for the virus.

McLaren said the infected team member was now self-isolating in Australia.

The coronavirus outbreak, now declared a pandemic, has led to widespread disruption of sporting fixtures.

McLaren said its choice to withdraw was “based on a duty of care” to F1 stakeholders.

The four members of the Haas Formula 1 team who were tested for the virus returned negative results.

The Chinese Grand Prix has already been postponed because of coronavirus and next week’s Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled to take place behind closed doors.

The first ever Vietnam Grand Prix on 5 April is also under threat because of the outbreak.
