Wise words from George Washington

Published: 2/3/2020 10:36:01 AM

In George Washington’s farewell address to the this nation, he presciently warned about the dangers of political parties that “… alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge.”

He continued by saying that political parties “… agitate(s) the community with ill founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another … It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption.”

So how ironic it was for me to see this news alert flash over my phone while I was reading Washington’s address: “A Trump lawyer argued that any action to aid re-election could be considered in the nation’s interest and therefore could not be impeachable.”

What? Trump’s lawyer seriously believes it’s OK to invite a foreign government to dig up dirt on a political rival? Washington would turn over in his grave.
