WHO Records Biggest Number of New Coronavirus Cases in a Single Day

The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday said the largest number of the new virus cases in a single day were recorded in the last 24 hours.

Speaking in Geneva, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said as of Wednesday there were 24,363 confirmed cases in China and 191 cases in 24 countries outside China.

The death toll stood at 490 people in China and one person in the Philippines, he added.

The WHO chief said some high-income countries have stepped up their reporting efforts since he called them out on not sharing “vital case data” on Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday, he said detailed information on infections outside China had been provided in only 38% of cases.

He said WHO’s greatest concern was the capacity of the virus to spread to “countries with weaker health systems”.
