Westerdam cruise ship passengers wait in Cambodia

It’s been an emotional ride for guests on board Holland America’s MS Westerdam. So much so, that Wednesday’s news that the ship was accepted by Cambodia, was met with a mixture of relief and skepticism. But now, the ship’s aimless journey is coming to a close: The ship has docked in Cambodia, and passengers are waiting to disembark.

Holland America confirmed the disembarkation would begin on Friday but said the process would take a few days.

“The Cambodian Health Ministry has announced that the 20 samples taken onboard Westerdam have all been confirmed as negative for coronavirus by the Pasteur Laboratory in Phnom Penh. As stated in previous communications, there were never any suspected cases of coronavirus on board,” Holland America Line said in a statement provided by public relations director Erik Elvejord.

As of Thursday, the line was working to book all flights for passengers. Guests were to remain on board overnight and would be updated on permission to get off the ship the next day, according to Elvejord, who said that discussions were ongoing as to whether guests would be able to leave the ship to walk around before disembarking.
