Want An EV Powered By Solar Energy? Buy An Audi E-Tron

Electric vehicles may have zero tailpipe emissions, but with 62% of electricity in the U.S. generated by fossil fuels in 2018, most still leave a significant carbon footprint behind whenever their batteries are charged. Renewable energy sources, such as solar, hydrogen, or hydropower, could change that equation, but not everyone has the money or geographically-correct real estate to make that a reality. However, a complimentary subscription to a solar energy farm could give Audi E-Tron buyers the Holy Grail they’re looking for: an electric vehicle powered by the sun.

Arcadia operates solar energy farms in remote locations across the U.S., and its platform enables customers to purchase electricity generated by their panels that can be sent directly to building meters or sold back to utility grids. Renters and homeowners can subscribe to this service to purchase electricity generated at these farms, and receive a credit on their energy bill if their utility company is compatible with the platform. A new partnership with Audi offers the first 3,000 buyers of E-Tron electric SUVs a complimentary 10 year subscription to this energy platform that provides them with solar-derived electricity generated from 10 solar panels. These panels produce approximately 80 kWh each month, according to Arcadia, and actual power-generation and savings will vary based on regional solar performance.

With a 95.3-kWh battery pack, the program can offset approximately one full Audi E-Tron charge per month per customer. The average price U.S. residential customers paid for electricity was $.13 per kWh (November 2019), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which means it offers a cost savings of around $12.40 per month depending in electricity rates in a consumer’s location.

But more than saving money, the partnership raises awareness for Arcadia’s program that opens access to renewable energy to all renters and homeowners regardless if they live in sunny climates or have the finances and ability to install solar panels on their roof. And there is nothing stopping environmentally motivated E-Tron owners from increasing their subscription if they wanted to fully offset their EV’s electricity consumption. Membership also enables Arcadia to connect residents to wind energy suppliers and benefit from other sources on the open market that may be cheaper than what their utility offers.

That said, not all customers will be able to qualify. Although Arcadia’s software is available in all 50 states, the residential utility provider must be integrated to work one of their commercial solar farms. On the upside, Audi E-Tron owners will be able to take their subscription with them if they move. The same can’t be said for roof-top solar panels.
