United, American suspend Hong Kong flights

United Airlines and American Airlines on Tuesday suspended their flights to Hong Kong as U.S. carriers continue to manage the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

United said it would cease flying from San Francisco International to Hong Kong through Feb. 20, with the final flight departing San Francisco on Wednesday, and the final flight departing Hong Kong on Friday.

The airline  cited a drop in demand and said it would monitor the situation to see if additional changes were needed.

American said Tuesday that it would suspend its flights to Hong Kong from Dallas-Fort Worth International and Los Angeles International through Feb. 20, also citing demand.

Delta Air Lines stopped flying to Hong Kong from Seattle in 2018.

United, American and Delta had suspended direct flights to mainland China amid the coronavirus outbreak, and many overseas carriers have done so as well.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific said Tuesday that it planned to cut its global capacity by 30% in the short term, and 90% on the mainland, Reuters reported.
