Norwegian won't refund $32,000 Asia cruise

A family from Hawaii says that they want to cancel their upcoming Asian cruise out of concern over coronavirus, but Norwegian Cruise Line won’t refund the $32,000 they’ve already paid for their trip.

Maui resident Pua Morrison told Honolulu TV station KHON2 that she and seven family members were scheduled to leave on a cruise scheduled to stop in Hong Kong. But with the number of coronavirus cases rising  in China, she says they decided to cancel their cruise and excursions.

As of Monday,  coronavirus had killed 362 people. There are 17,306 cases in mainland China with another 183 spread across 27 countries. There are now 11 confirmed cases in the United States.

Morrison and her family were to sail on Norwegian Jade, which is due to leave Singapore Thursday on an itinerary that includes stops in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam before ending in Hong Kong on Feb. 17. According to the Centers for Disease Control, all of those countries have confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Morrison says she booked the trip through Costco Travel in February 2019. When she contacted Costco, they advised her to speak directly to Norwegian, which allegedly wouldn’t return her money despite telling her, “We understand the situation” and “safety is our No. 1 issue” and “we would never put any of our passengers in harm’s way.”

The Norwegian Jade is set to leave Singapore on Feb. 6 on an itinerary that includes stops in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam before ending in Hong Kong.

Morrison told KHON 2 the message she got from Norwegian was: “The bottom line is if you cancel, you lose all your money.”

“Rather than put myself through all that headache and most of all the risk of getting this virus, I just want to be able to cancel my cruise and get my refund,” Morrison said. “That’s all I ask. And I don’t think that’s a lot to ask with what’s going on. And it’s getting worse every day.”
