5 fashion trends that dominated awards season

On the red carpet, it pays to stand out.

This year’s batch of nominees – and those who hoped to be nominated, only to get snubbed – hit endless red carpets ahead of Sunday’s Academy Awards (ABC, 8 p.m. ET/5 PT). Every weekend brought a new peek at what Margot Robbie was rocking or daring looks J. Lo had in store. Lucky for us, this meant a ton of fashion to sift through, and new trends to digest.

Whether it was at the Golden Globes or last weekend’s BAFTA Awards, stars showed off a host of ways to keep black-tie attire fresh. Here are some of the most notable trends.

Zoe Kravitz donned Audrey Hepburn-like white gloves for the SAG Awards, but gave the look her own vibe.

Elegant opera gloves

For a touch of the dramatic, stars added opera-length globes to their ensembles this awards season. (Remember when Amal Clooney did that at the Globes in 2015?) This year, Zoe Kravitz donned Audrey Hepburn-like white gloves for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while Ariana Grande wore matching gray gloves on the Grammys red carpet and Janet Mock rocked a glittering pair of gloves at the Critics’ Choice Awards. (Meanwhile, Margot Robbie is keeping the trend alive while she promotes “Birds of Prey.”)

Sheer corsetry

Corsets played peekaboo on red carpets this season. At the Globes, Charlize Theron’s black bustier peeked out of her lime green Dior Haute Couture gown while Rachel Bilson’s Brock Collection sheer lace bodice showed off a bit of boning. The trend continued at the SAG Awards, where Joey King rocked a sheer, corset-inspired Jason Wu dress, and at the Producers Guild of America Awards, which saw Kaitlyn Dever pair a white corset Olivier Theyskens top with black pants. And at Sunday’s BAFTA Awards, Daisy Ridley’s sheer caped gown offered sheer corsetry beneath.

Playful tuxes

Here’s to the dudes who ditched basic black. Among our favorite risk-takers were Barry Jenkins, who rocked an accentuated Thom Browne tuxedo for the Globes, Andrew Scott, who layered a crimson Berluti suit over a hot pink shirt at Critics’ Choice and Timothee Chalamet, effortlessly cool as always at the National Board of Review Gala layering a white Stella McCartney tuxedo over a T-shirt.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (left) and Margaret Qualley wore splendid pantsuits during this awards season.

Cool lady suiting

A-list ladies embraced menswear this awards season with relish. Phoebe Waller-Bridge rarely ditched her favored pantsuits for dresses (her Ralph & Russo Globes look is our favorite, which she later auctioned off for Australian wildfire relief), while Ellen DeGeneres sparkled in a midnight tuxedo the same night. And at the SAG Awards, we loved suiting worn by both young Julia Butters and Margaret Qualley.

Olivia Wilde showed off cool mismatching earrings on the Critics' Choice red carpet.

Mismatched earrings and headbands

Bring on the cool accessories! Two of our favorite trends were shown off during awards season: mismatched earrings and playful headbands. At the Critics’ Choice Awards, both Olivia Wilde and Anne Hathaway got playful with different-sized sparklers, while Taylor Swift’s earrings at the Globes rearranged colored stones. We were also into fun headgear, from Beanie Feldstein’s navy Globes headband to the celestial one rocked by Theron at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. And at the SAG Awards, the pearl crown went to America Ferrera.
