PASADENA, Calif. – Nicole Kidman has been through her share of Oscar ceremonies and award seasons, enough to see a little bit of progress in Hollywood over the years.

When it comes to Monday’s Oscar nominations, in which, once again, no women were nominated in the director category, Kidman says she thinks the way to get women directors more awards is to keep working with them.

Speaking to reporters about her new HBO show, “The Undoing,” she noted that she sought out director Susanne Bier (“Bird Box”) for the miniseries, which she stars in with Hugh Grant.

“I think the progress is just (to) choose to work with the people we love and the women we love and the times they are a-changin’,” she said. “So that’s all we can do. Keep talking about it and supporting and I see all these women standing here going ‘yeah!’ But that’s what we’re doing. And I do believe it is changing.”

“I went to Susanne with the series and said, ‘do you want to do this.’ She was the only director we went to and she said yes. And that is just a wonderful thing,” Kidman said. She noted that she is also working with Lulu Wang, who many saw as snubbed by the Academy for her 2019 film “The Farewell.”

“To take (a film) to Lulu and go, ‘do you want to do this,’ and she goes ‘yes,’ it’s just a wonderful thing as an actor, particularly a woman who’s the age that I am and being able to have a say, as I’ve always said, in my destiny. And not having someone else choose my destiny.”

“The Undoing” will debut on HBO this spring.
