100+ New England museums will be free for Smithsonian magazine's Museum Day

More than 100 New England museums and cultural institutions will offer free admission on a single day in September during Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day.

The nationwide event, which launched in 2005, has grown from around 200 museums to an expected 1,500 participating museums this year. This year’s theme is “Smithsonian Year of Music,” which means some museums will incorporate music into the day. For example, at the Armenian Museum of America in Watertown, guests will listen to live Armenian music in the galleries.

More than 40 Massachusetts spots will take part in this year’s event, from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum Foundation in Hyannis to The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst.

Those interested must download a ticket, which provides free admission to the ticket holder and one guest. According to Smithsonian magazine, there were 453,520 ticket downloads last year. The museums that require a printed ticket for entry will specify so on the ticket, while others will allow guests to show their ticket via a smartphone or tablet. Only one ticket is permitted per email address.

Ahead, discover the New England museums and cultural institutions currently participating this year. You’ll want to keep your eye on the event website, as more may be added since museums can register through Sept. 18.
