Kyrie Irving will miss return to Boston with shoulder injury

Boston fans are not going to give Kyrie Irving a very warm reception when he comes back to town. That seems certain. When he returns to Beantown is now uncertain.

The Brooklyn Nets have ruled Irving out for at least the next three games, including Wednesday's matchup against the Celtics that was to be Irving's first game in Boston since leaving in free agency this past summer. Irving has missed the last four games with a right shoulder impingement suffered on Nov. 12.

Irving will miss the Nets' upcoming stretch of three straight road games that starts Sunday against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. He'll miss a matchup against another former team when the Nets play in Cleveland on Monday.

Irving injured his shoulder last week in Utah. He played two nights later in a loss to the Nuggets in Denver before sitting out the next four games.

"I don’t think he can play through it right now quite honestly," Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said Thursday. "The shoulder is just sensitive, especially for a point guard, like a quarterback. The way he shoots it, passing, the whole thing. He’s working through it right now, and we’ve got to work through not having him."
