Irish weather forecast: Heavy rain in the south today ahead of wet and 'potentially windy' weekend

Parts of the country will be lashed by heavy rain today, with the south getting a drenching.

Met Eireann forecasters have revealed Ireland will be lashed by heavy rain on Wednesday and there will be further rain and "potentially windy" weather this Saturday.

The showers will drench Munster on Wednesday morning before travelling north and eastwards, reaching south Leinster and south Connacht by early afternoon.

Southern coastal areas will be hit hardest by heavy showers while the best of any sunny spells will be in Ulster.

Lowest temperatures will be between 5C and 10C, with the colder conditions in the north. Winds will be moderate to fresh from an easterly direction, decreasing moderate southeasterly later.

Halloween looks set to be relatively mild with highs of 15C however, there will be further heavy showers.

A forecaster said: "It will stay mostly cloudy on Thursday with occasional outbreaks of rain, some heavy.

"A heavier spell of rain will develop in the evening in the south and that will extend country wide through the first part of the night. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C in moderate southeast winds veering southerly later.

Meanwhile, Friday will be cloudy but there will be spells of rain in the daytime as well as the possibility of a spell of heavy rain moving eastwards on Friday night.

Heading into the weekend, Met Eireann warned that conditions will remain unsettled due to areas of low pressure moving close to Ireland, bringing spells of rain and "potentially windy" conditions on Saturday.

A forecaster revealed: "There is a higher than usual level of uncertainty associated with the track of weather systems this weekend due to extensive, deep areas of low pressure active in mid Atlantic."

Temperatures will remain normal for this time of year but the nights will be chilly with a risk of frost.
