Friends: Chandler Bing star axed controversial LGBT storline | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

While Friends remains the most popular sit-com across all streaming services, not all of the show’s storylines go down well in present day. Now, a new book, ‘Generation Friends: An Inside Look At The Show That Defined a Television Era’, has revealed Chandler Bing Star Matthew Perry turned down a very controversial storyline.

According to the book by Saul Austerlitz, Matthew shut down a plot which would have seen Chandler dine out in a gay bar.

However, Chandler’s reason for the visit was because they do the best tuna melts.

Saul explains: “Perry said no, and the story was shelved.”

The book doesn’t detail exactly why the star axed the plot.

Reddit user Theluckygal explained: “At central perk, he always left the 'Reserved' sign on the table in front of the couch for the gang to hangout so that he could see Rachel regularly.

“Since it’s a busy neighbourhood, Rachel might not always get a table so he left the couch open all the time for her & her friends.”

When Radio Times put the theory to James Michael Tyler, he said: "I read about that recently too.

“I never did that! That was probably one of the set designers, I’m guessing, maybe one of the writers…

"I’m not sure who was responsible for that. But I do remember seeing that [‘Reserved’ sign].

"It never really occurred to me why it was there, but it makes a lot of sense [that Gunther put it there] in retrospect.

"There are a lot of little Easter eggs which are in there, that people will be looking for years to come!"
